Snaffles (Charlie Johnson Payne) 1884 – 1967

Charlie Johnson Payne was born in Lemington, Warwickshire, on 17th January 1884, the fourth of eight brothers and sisters. The Payne family grew up in peace-time and the Crimean War was remembered to them as exciting and colourful by their great uncle. Amongst Snaffles' earliest childhood memories were the parades of the Warwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry through Warwick and it was from all these memories that his interest in horses and military was originated.
